Hot prospect Michael Oliveira remains unbeaten with 10th KO in 12 fights
MIAMI (May 4, 2010) – Brazilian middleweight prospect “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira kept his unbeaten record intact, stopping rugged 29-fight veteran Jessie Davis in the fourth round, last Saturday night at Miccosukee Resort in Miami.
Oliveira (12-0, 10 KOs), who only turned 20 last week, is the heir apparent to retired Brazilian boxing star Acelino “Popo” Freitas. Michael hadn’t fought since December but had been specifically working at the Normandy Gym with his trainer, Danny Hawk, on setting-up his big right had with stiff jabs.
All of Oliveira’s hard work in the gym paid dividends this past Saturday as he hammered Davis, opening a cut over his left eye that progressively got worse, until referee Tommy Kimmons halted the action at 1:10 of the fourth frame with a game Davis still standing.
“I felt great,” Oliveira said. “I’d been away five months but, once I got in the ring, other than being a little nervous at first, I forgot about everything but fighting my opponent and taking care of business. My punches were straighter and I didn’t go out there looking for the kill. I’ve learned to be patient, something I haven’t always been in the past, and strategized during the fight. They say don’t worry, it’ll come, and it did.”
Davis, to say the least, is extremely tough. He’s also somewhat of a gatekeeper for prospects having fought Keith Thurman, Joey Hernandez and many other young, up-and-coming contenders like Oliveira.
“I don’t know what his head is made of but even my knuckles started to hurt,” Michael noted. “I consider myself a strong puncher and hit him with everything, but he never hit the canvas. He has a very strong chin. After the fight he told me he’d never been hit so hard.”
Oliveira’s next fight is tentatively scheduled for early June at Miccosukee. He may have another fight leading up to his homecoming, August 7th, with the Miami resident fighting for the first time where he was born, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Hot Brazilian middleweight prospect Michael Oliveira puts undefeated record on line Apr. 30 at Miccosukee
MIAMI (Apr. 23, 2010) – 2009 Brazilian Athlete of the Year, unbeaten middleweight prospect “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira, returns to the ring April 30 to fight for the first time this year in a 6-round bout against 28-fight veteran Jessie Davis at Miccosukee Resort in Miami.
Oliveira (11-0, 8 KOs), who only turns 20 next Monday, is the heir apparent to retired Brazilian boxing star Acelino “Popo” Freitas. Michael hasn’t fought since December but he has been working out at Normandy Gym in North Miami.
“I’ve been training very, very hard,” he said. “I’ve had amazing sparring, too. We’ve been training twice a day for 1 ½ months. I’m ready for whoever they put in the ring with me. The time is right for me to fight again. You can’t rush or things won’t come out good.”
Now living and fighting out of Miami, the charismatic boxer is unique among contemporary fighters having had only two amateur matches, coupled with being a student at Miami Dade Community College, and coming from an affluent family.
Oliveira has a homecoming fight tentatively scheduled August 7 in Sao Paulo, where he was born, but first he has to get past Davis. “I use the August 7th fight as motivation for this fight,” Oliveira explained. “I know that I can’t lose April 30th for the August 7th fight to happen in Brazil. I’ve dreamed of fighting back home. I want to show everybody in Brazil that, every time I step in the ring, I represent our country.”

Unbeaten middleweight Michael Oliveira Oliveira learns ropes from Bernard Hopkins
MIAMI (Apr. 19, 2009) – For four invaluable weeks at the Normandy Gym in North Miami, undefeated middleweight prospect “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira (11-0, 8 KOs), the heir apparent to retired Brazilian boxing star Acelino “Popo” Freitas, acted more like a sponge than a young prize fighter.
The 19-year-old Oliveira, who is trained by Danny Hawk at Normandy Gym, absorbed everything he heard or viewed from the Hall of Fame-bound boxer also training in the North Miami gym, Bernard Hopkins, who had set-up training camp there to prepare for his eventual victory last month against Roy Jones.
Oliveira, living and fighting out of Miami, is unique among contemporary professional boxers, coming from an affluent family, attending Miami Dade Community College, and having only a two-match amateur career.
“I didn’t spar with Bernard,” Oliveira explained, “but he pulled me aside each day for about 15 minutes to teach me his personal moves. He told me not to forget anything, because he was only teaching me once, and I learned a lot from him. He taught me that age was just a number, to put my mind and heart into training, and with determination you can conquer anything. Anything is possible if you train hard, he stressed.”
Watching Hopkins workout live also benefited the talented teenager. “He is very, very calm in the ring,” he noted. “He never wastes unnecessary energy; he’s not fidgety, he glides around the ring. And he’s very, very focused on his opponent. I noticed that he only throws a punch when he’s almost certain it’ll land. I just listened, watched and took everything in. It was a great experience.”
Oliveira Enjoyed Brazilian Celebration Last Weekend
Michael received his award as the 2009 Brazilian Athlete of the Year this past Friday night at the Brazilian International Press Awards ceremony in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. The following day Michael was a special VIP guest in front of 20,000 at Brazilian Day festivities in Miami.
Oliveira is slated to fight April 30 on a show at Miccosukee Resort in Miami, tuning-up for his proposed homecoming, August 7 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
“I’ve been training, sparring and pushing my body to the limit with Danny at the gym.” Michael concluded. “The hardest part of boxing is training. Fighting is easy because you’re in top shape and do what you’ve been practicing. I can’t wait to get back in the ring to fight.”

Michael Oliveira 2009 Brazilian Athlete of the Year
MIAMI (Mar. 11, 2010) – Unbeaten middleweight boxing sensation, “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira (11-0, 9 KOs) has been officially selected as the Brazilian International Press Award’s 2009 Athlete of the Year Award.
The 19-year-old Oliveira, living in Miami and attending Miami Dade Community College, is the heir apparent to retired Acelino “Popo” Freitas in Brazilian boxing circles. Michael was the leading vote-getter from a group of only 10 nominated Brazilian athletes, including Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, as well as NBA players Nene Hilario and Anderson Varejao.
“I was honored just to be nominated, never mind selected, as the winner of this prestigious award,” Oliveira said. “I’d like to thank all my fans for supporting me with their votes. I represent all of the Brazilians living back home as well as those in the United States. Brazil is always No. 1 in my heart. We take all sports, especially boxing, serious but no matter what the final results, it always ends with Samba music and partying. I’m only 19 and hopefully I can win this award again for years to come.”
The hard-punching teenager, who is the reigning UNBC Latin champion, won each of his eight fights last year, and he hopes to be back in the ring in late April.

Michael wins again, still undefeated
Fresh off of his impressive first-round stoppage of Gustavo De La Cruz last week in the Dominican Republic, unbeaten Brazilian middleweight prospect “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira (10-0, 8 KOs) has been added to Friday night’s (Dec. 18) pro card at the Karibe Convention Center in Petionville, Haiti.
The 19-year-old Oliveira, a student at Miami Dade Community College, was born in Brazil but lives and fights out of Miami. The charismatic teenager is matched against dangerous Dominican puncher Edvardo Mercedes (5-2, 5 KOs) in an 8-round bout.
The power-punching Oliveira is being groomed as the heir apparent to Brazilian boxing star Acelino “Popo” Freitas, 4-time world champion, who retired two years ago.
“Even though Michael just boxed (Dec. 7) and will be fighting twice within 11days,” Oliveira’s father/promoter Carlos explained, “we took this fight because it’s a great opportunity for Michael to close out the year with a bang. There are many Brazilian peace keeping United Nations forces stationed in Haiti and Michael wants to give them an early Christmas present. They’re away from home during the holidays, serving their country, and this fight will give them a feeling of home and Brazilian pride with one of their own in the ring. Michael came out of his last fight in great shape. He’s only 19 and lives in the gym. We’re not concerned fighting again so soon. Everybody is really looking forward to it.”
Oliveira’s valued sponsors include The Confianca Moving, The Beira – Mar and Pro 1 from Sao Paulo, Dumonde Travel (Michael’s official travel agency) and the multi-national fuel company, Shell.

Unbeaten middleweight Michael Oliveira Next Brazilian Boxing Star in Making
Unbeaten middleweight prospect “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira (10-0, 8 KOs), the heir apparent to revered Acelino “Popo” Freitas, is the hottest thing to come out of Brazil since super model Gisele Bundchen.
There has been a noticeable void in Brazilian boxing since the wildly popular Freitas, 4-time world champion, hung-up his gloves for the final time nearly two years ago. The 19-year-old Oliveira is being positioned to replace Freitas in the hearts and minds of passionate Brazilian boxing fans in South America as well as those living in the United States.
Oliveira, living and fighting out of Miami, is unique among professional boxers, coming from an affluent family, attending Miami Dade Community College, and having only a two-match amateur career.
Boxing, however, was always in his blood. His late grandfather, Joao Oliveira, was an amateur boxer who sparred a few times with Brazil’s all-time greatest boxer, 3-time world bantamweight and featherweight champion Eder “Golden Bantam” Jofre (72-2-4, 50 KOs/1957-1976).
Michael once weighed more than 250-pounds but he now fights nearly 100-pounds lighter as a middleweight with plans to eventually drop down to junior middleweight.
Last week in Coral Gables (FL), Team Oliveira had a coming out party for Michael at Randazzo’s restaurant, owned by former world cruiserweight title contender Mark Randazzo, to celebrate Oliveira’s first year as a pro. Close to 100 attendees included family members, friends, celebrities, business executives, media, sponsors and fans.
“I can’t really explain that experience,” the present UNBC Latin middleweight champion said about last week’s party. “It was a special feeling to see myself in the eyes of people there. Most importantly, though, was to see the smiles on the faces of my family. I really enjoyed myself. I’m grateful to have the tremendous support I receive from everyone.
“I know I still have a long way to go, but someday I want to be world champion and help people understand that there’s more than soccer in Brazil. I want people all over the world to think boxing when they hear Brazil. I box because I love it. I also think it’s important to be a role model and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Oliveira has Hollywood-like, marquee looks but he still lives at home with his mother, two brothers, and father, Carlos, who serves as Michael’s promoter (Rumble Stars) and chief advisor. Oliveira has a fan-friendly, entertaining style that combines an aggressive attack featuring an array of powerful punches thrown with mean intentions. He regularly works out at Normandy Gym in North Miami and is trained by Danny Hawk.
“When Bernard Hopkins trained here (Normandy Gym) for his fight against (Kelly) Pavlik,” Carlos remarked, “he told me Michael has what it takes to be the next Oscar de la Hoya. Coming from a great champion like Bernard, I think that says volumes about Michael’s potential as a boxer, as well as his marketability.”
The journey has just begun for shooting star Michael Oliveira, who carries the pride of Brazil on his muscular shoulders. Go to www.MichaelOliveria.com for more information.

Michael Oliveira takes one step towards winning the latin title
Miami-FL – The light-weight fighter Michael Oliveira, the big rev elation of Brazilian Boxing, climbed the ring once again, last Saturday May 16 at the Farm Bureau Building in Indianapolis, USA.
In a fight, supposed to last 6 rounds, the Brazilian fighter who is just 19 years old, faced the American fighter Joe Howard and won by knockout in the first round.
The fight began with the American on the offense against the Brazilian who cleverly tried to avoid his opponents attacks.
Working well with jabs, Michael kept holding the opponent until two minutes and five seconds of the first round.
In a counter-attack, the Brazilian connected with a powerful right punch which knocked Howard to the floor of the ring.
Michael continues with an impeccable record.
That was the seventh win of the Brazilian who remains unbeaten in his career.
It was also the sixth knockout being that five of them were in the first round.
According to Carlos Oliveira, manager and father of the fighter, the wins at the beginning of the fights are very important to keep Michael with a “clean face”, so as that he does not suffers with his opponents’ attacks.
“Michael is just 19 years old. It’s very important that he only has wins with the lowest mileage possible”, reported Michael’s father and manager.
The Brazilian’s next fight will be in September. The location has not been decided yet, however the fight will be worth NABC’s latin title.
That will be the big fight of Michael’s life, because besides being the first Brazilian to win the title, new markets will be opened for the fighter.
NABC is a very recognized Council in Europe, mainly in Germany.
“If Michael wins the title, it is very likely that a fighter from Germany will challenge him”, reported Carlos Oliveira.
Michael’s efforts are not only limited to the ring. A team of high level medical doctors, physical trainers and nutritionists accompany the athlete’s career.
They are all professionals who are used to the boxing world, such as the nutritionist Lisa Dorfman who prior to working with Oliveira took care of former world champion Jermain Taylor.
The target now is to make the Brazilian lose weight. Oliveira started the fight against Joe Howard weighing 162 pounds, approximately 73.5 kilograms, but what is expected for the next fight in September is that he weighs 158 pounds, approximately 71.8 kilograms.
Michael was born in São Paulo, Brazil and moved to the US before he turned one year old.
Oliveira started his boxing life around the age of 13 but only had his first amateur fight at the age of 17.
The fighter had his first professional fight in August of 2008 when he was just 18 years old.

Young Brazilian shines in professional boxing in the United States
Michael Oliveira wins in Miami.
Now the goal is to dispute the “Latin Belt”
Miami, Florida – After winning another fight and maintaining an undefeated record in his professional career, the young Brazilian fighter Michael Oliveira declared that he wants to be the world champion as he was hugging his father, the person who has encouraged him the most. Apparently, he has all the merits to reach that goal.
On March 20th, at the Doubletree Hotel in Miami, the victorious history of the Brazilian fighter repeated itself. The middle-weight boxer, Michael Oliveira, already known to his fans and the boxing world as “The Chairman of the Board “, defeated by unanimous decision of the referees, the Uruguayan Vladimir Laguna who was coming from 4 consecutive wins by knock-out.
Michael started the fight by making good combinations around the waist area of the provocative Laguna and at the end of the first round he had already established a small advantage. Returning for the second round, led by Danny Hawk, he attached with violence and a sequence of moves that hurt the Uruguayan with precise hits which set the tone for the rest of the fight.
The victory in Miami did not alter Michael’s humble profile. He recognizes the rough road that he will have to follow to achieve the dream of a world title.
The next step of the journey will take place in Chicago and it will take Michael closer to the achievement of the “Latin Belt”. The Latin Belt which will take the Brazilian native “Chairman of the Board” to a higher position in the world ranking.
Rapid Success
In much less time than imaginable, Michael has already established himself as a strong candidate for a successful career. Unlike the traditional tales of boxing, Michael does not fight for money; he helps his less privileged colleagues and works to move young people away from drugs. Michael also has the unconditional support of his family all while maintaining an attractive facial profile.
In the ring, he has a different profile of a fearless and aggressive fighter with the desire to define the fight in the first round. His path has been made and it will not be smooth. But those who see Michael fight can bet that this fighter is one of those talents that do not show up every day.
